about
Breaking the ten-year silence since 2014’s »Yearling«, Rafael Anton Irisarri and Benoît Pioulard return as Orcas with »Under the Milky Way«, a version of the 1988 underground hit by The Church, as a precursor to their upcoming third full-length for Morr Music. With many lessons learned through the past decade of loss, heartbreak and relocation, the duo found inspiration to reconfigure their lives and creative approaches with a renewed passion for collaboration. Building on a spacious, mid-tempo arrangement of velvety pads, Irisarri’s inimitable guitar tone, and Pioulard’s distinctive baritone vocals, »Under the Milky Way« resolutely intensifies amid a lush, cosmic fullness.
While previous Orcas interpretations – including Broadcast’s »Until Then« (2012) and My Bloody Valentine’s »Don’t Ask Why« (2014) – explored varying degrees of minimalism and warbling reverb, here we find them evoking the melancholy wilderness of the source material in every corner of the stereo field. Citing peak-era British new wave, dream pop, and impressionism as primary influences on recent work, Orcas give a tantalizing view into their bond as both musicians and friends, as well as the stunning levels of production acuity that Irisarri has developed in recent years with his renowned Black Knoll.
»Under the Milky Way'« unfurls like a quiet, moonlit drive, offering darkness and sweetness in equal measure. A natural combination of Pioulard’s avant-pop sensibilities – heard on many solo albums for kranky and Morr Music – and Irisarri’s penchant for walls of intense, harmonically textured sounds, Orcas yet again brings out the best of each artist, for a remarkable version of a perennial heartbreaker.

Shoegaze ist die Kunst des Dröhnens, doch „Everything Is Alive“ setzt diese Elemente nur sparsam ein. Statt Hall- und Zerr-Sounds aufzutürmen, schäumt die Musik in feinen Bläschen über.
